Right in the heart of Hamburg, a new waterfront neighborhood is taking shape: Grasbrook. It will provide housing for 6,000 people and create 16,000 jobs. Located across from downtown and right next to the harbor, Grasbrook offers a unique opportunity to build a piece of the future while addressing the major challenges of our time—from climate and resource protection to social cohesion and new ways of working.
Grasbrook is characterized by many special features: With its spacious parks, green corridors and waterfront promenades as well as numerous sports facilities and playgrounds, the new district offers attractive places for sport, recreation and socializing.
Grasbrook's special location between the city and the port, the historical framework conditions and the overarching concepts of Hamburg's urban development result in five key objectives for Grasbrook.

The new Grasbrook district is not to be developed as an isolated "island", but in intensive dialog with the people of Hamburg and the neighboring districts. The integration of Grasbrook into the neighborhood, in particular Veddel, but also Rothenburgsort, Wilhelmsburg and HafenCity, was taken into consideration from the very beginning of the planning process. And the dialogue is to be continued in the concrete planning steps that now lie ahead.
Competitive procedures play an important role in Grasbrook in order to secure urban and open space planning qualities and to develop functional, technical and social ideas. The initial conditions from the history of the site must be taken into account as well as future demands for sustainability and innovation. It is also important to sound out the perspectives of a wide range of stakeholders and feed them into the planning process.
