Five key objectives for Grasbrook

With its spacious parks, green spaces and waterfront promenades as well as numerous sports facilities and playgrounds, the new Grasbrook district offers attractive places for exercise, recreation and socializing. The warehouses, quay walls and other historical features, some of which are listed, are reminders of the area's maritime past. Another unique element will be the weather-protected open space under the newly created large "roof"which is reminiscent of the "overseas center" that once dominated the area.
Its special location between the city and the port, the historical framework conditions and the overarching concepts of Hamburg's urban development have resulted in five key objectives for Grasbrook, which play a central role in its realization:
Neighborhoods grow together
In conjunction with the neighboring Veddel, Grasbrook assumes an important hinge function for Hamburg's "leap across the Elbe". Two quarters are being created within Grasbrook - the Moldauhafenquartier as a mixed-use district with a residential focus and the Hafentorquartier as a new type of commercial location.

Green city on the waterfront
The concepts for open space and urban development were planned and developed jointly from the outset. The open spaces form the basic framework for the entire district. Parks and green corridors traverse the quarters, streets have the character of green urban spaces. The Elbe and the harbor basins become active adventure spaces. Urban nature thus becomes a habitat for people, animals and plants and at the same time increases biodiversity.
City for all
A variety of housing and workplace options and the inclusion of low-barrier concepts make Grasbrook attractive for people of all ages and income levels. People with different backgrounds and lifestyles should not only be able to live and work here, but also find numerous places to meet.

Short distances
Be it school, shopping facilities, sports facilities and playgrounds, medical practices or cafés: in the low-car Grasbrook district, everything is right on the doorstep and can be reached quickly and safely within 10 minutes - on foot, by bike or using local public transport. Thanks to the new subway station in the center of Grasbrook, public transport connections to other parts of the city are also optimally guaranteed.
Sustainable city
Sustainable architecture, climate-friendly energy supply, future-proof flood protection and the use of water cycles make Grasbrook a resilient district. At the same time, the former, heavily sealed harbor area is being ecologically upgraded thanks to many new green spaces.
