Veddel and the future Grasbrook district are direct neighbors - and were previously separated in terms of urban space. If you want to get from one district to the other, you have to cross a wide road consisting of railroad tracks and a multi-lane road. This is set to change: With the Grasbrook innovation district, around 3,000 apartments, 16,000 jobs and new leisure, educational and cultural venues are being created on former port land - as well as a new U4 underground station. Thanks to new connections, this wide range of services should also be quickly and conveniently accessible for Veddel .
The Veddel bridge as a central connection
The Veddel bridge is the most important new connection: In future, people will be able to get from Veddel to Grasbrook and vice versa safely and barrier-free on foot, by bike, with a wheelchair or baby carriage. It also provides direct access to the new "Moldauhafen" subway station.
The design of the bridge will be determined as part of a two-phase competition in 2025/2026. HafenCity Hamburg GmbH is conducting the competition with the State Office for Roads, Bridges and Waters on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition. The competition started in late summer 2025 and the winning design will be chosen in summer 2026.
Citizens' Council accompanies the process
A citizens' council of ten people from Veddel is supporting the competition process. The expression of interest process, which began in April, ended on June 30. Ten people were selected from all the applications to reflect the diversity of the district as well as possible. The Citizens' Council takes part in meetings and discussions, and its opinions are incorporated into the jury. In the final phase of the competition, additional feedback will be obtained directly from the district through outreach participation .

A schematic sketch of the Veddel bridge shows the effective connection.
It does not make any concrete statements about architecture and uses.
