Competition Moldauhafenbrücke
The Moldauhafenbrücke – First construction project in the new Grasbrook district takes shape
The northern part of the new Grasbrook urban development area, the so-called Moldauhafenquartier, forms a peninsula in the Norderelbe and is mainly surrounded by water. Bridges therefore play a central role as connecting routes, both for internal and external development. This includes the new Moldauhafenbrücke, which connects Moldauhafenquartier with Hafentorquartier and is flood-protected and primarily designed for pedestrian and cycle traffic. The design competition organized by HafenCity Hamburg GmbH in agreement with the Department for Urban Development and Housing has been decided. The winners were Schüßler-Plan Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH (Berlin) and DKFS Architects (London). The construction of the Moldauhafenbrücke is due to start in 2026.
The Moldauhafenbrücke is 138 meters long and between 18 and 22 meters wide. It will connect the Prager Ufer (Moldauhafenquartier) with the Melniker Ufer (Hafentorquartier). The main use is for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The competition design therefore attaches great importance to a high sojourn quality through expansive seating furniture, which separates the roadway from the footpaths in the middle of the bridge and allows people to linger on the bridge. From there, there are sweeping views as far as HafenCity with the Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The bridge is also designed for Hamburger Hochbahn bus traffic and for emergency vehicles. In the future, the autonomous HEAT buses could also cross the bridge.
In addition to linking the two Grasbrook quarters, the Moldauhafenbrücke will play an important role in the flood protection concept for the new district: The bridge will provide a flood-protected connection to both external access routes, the Sachsenbrücke in the south-east and the district entrance in the north-east, in the form of a closed "ring road" via Grasbrook Boulevard and Hafen Boulevard.
