In the fall of 2024, tens of thousands of people got involved in the question of what the future subway station in the new district should be called. The name Moldauhafen prevailed - not only in keeping with the historic harbor basin over which the station is to float elegantly, but also with the new Moldauhafenquartier.

The Grasbrook district offers future residents, employees and visitors a sustainable mobility structure.

Dr. Andreas Kleinau, Chairman of the Management Board of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH:

"Up to 90 percent of journeys can be made using the "environmental alliance" of walking, cycling and public transport. However, the new subway station is also to be made accessible to the existing district of Veddel via the Veddel Bridge."

The naming competition showed impressively how much the people of Hamburg want to actively shape their city. Around 1,500 suggestions were initially submitted from September onwards. According to the specifications of Hamburger Hochbahn , the names should be as concise and unmistakable as possible in order to provide good orientation. With this in mind, the jury selected Grasbrook, Prager Ufer and Moldauhafen as the finalists. The jury was made up of representatives from HOCHBAHN, the hvv transport association, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, HafenCity Hamburg GmbH and Veddel .

In the end, 15,000 people took part in the online vote, in which Moldauhafen came out on top with over 10,000 votes.

"The leap across the Elbe with the U4 is taking on ever more concrete form with the now named stop Moldauhafen ," says Hamburg's Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, Anjes Tjarks.

Robert Henrich, CEO of HOCHBAHN, adds: "The name reflects this location, but also emphasizes the connection between the subway and the Port of Hamburg, which is so rich in tradition."

If everything runs smoothly, the U4 will run from Elbbrücken to the new Moldauhafen stop for the first time in 2031.
